Chapter 1-3 Summary
Chapter 1 - A pretty but disheveled peasant girl named Jolie comes to the house of Parry, a white wizard, at the behest of Parry's father, the Sorcerer. Jolie is terrified she might be harmed, but Parry swears on the Virgin Mary he will not harm her. Parry explains that fifteen years ago, as a baby, he was to be a sacrifice for a spell, but the local Abbot intervened to stop the bloodletting. The Abbot made sure the Sorcerer would adopt Parry and made sure the Sorcerer raised Parry well. Parry goes on to explain that when the Abbot died, the Sorcerer continued raising him as his own son, educating him in white magic. Parry has chosen Jolie, fourteen years old, to be his wife, because she is the best woman in the village.
