Harry Dresden
Harry Dresden is a powerful wizard and one of a few who uses his knowledge and power as a means to make a living. Dresden often works with the police department to help solve crimes while also taking jobs from private persons wanting to investigate possibly haunted places or items.
Dresden is struggling financially when this novel begins because Murphy, the head of special investigation with the police department has not been giving him jobs. Dresden believes it is because she no longer trusts him because he had to lie to her. However, it also learns that it has something to do with an internal affairs investigation into an investigation Dresden and Murphy ran together.
