Fences

Fences represent obstacles. Annemarie's fear of fences is one she must conquer for the sake of herself and Eva. The thought of jumping any fence on a horse, from the paddock fence it appears Eva is going to jump on Hurrah to the double oxer at Eva’s competition, causes Annemarie react out of fear. She associates those fences with the fence she and Harry were jumping when Harry died and Annemarie broke her neck. At the end of the novel, when Annemarie jumps a fence on Hurrah, she demonstrates that she has overcome her fear through therapy and with the help of her family.
