Summary

In Chapter 12, the following morning Annemarie wakes terrible eczema on her face. It is apparent she has spent the night crying. Mutti comforts her when Annemarie tells her that Dan gave her only earrings. Annemarie arrives late to Nathalie’s pre-event meeting and is criticized by both Nathalie and Eva. Eva seems at first concerned that her mother is so upset. Eva is angry when Nathalie announces the van has broken down and the girls will have to ride to the competition with their mothers.

Eva refuses to talk to her mother during the drive even though Annemarie tries to interest her in the scenery, particularly in a mountain formation she calls the Old Man. Annemarie finally tells Eva that she broke up with Dan. She is so afraid she will cry that she does not say anything when they pass the Old...
