Summary
In Chapter 3, when Annemarie reaches the woman’s dilapidated house, a poorly dressed little girl is sitting on the front porch. The woman introduces herself as Eugenie Alcott. She takes Annemarie to a garage that is in worse shape than the house. Annemarie is sickened by the smell of ammonia. She orders the woman to get the horse out of the tiny, excrement-filled stall where he is standing. As soon as the woman opens the stall door, the horse runs. He is emaciated and has ulcers on his legs.
Annemarie calls Mutti from the woman’s house to bring a horse trailer. She is still on the phone when Eugenie’s husband arrives, slamming the door into the wall. The girl screams, runs to Annemarie and clings to her. The man grabs Eugenie by the throat and puts his hand over her mouth...
