Summary

In Chapter 1, Annemarie Zimmer wakes from a dream that she is riding her horse, Harry, who died more than twenty years before during a jumping competition. Annemarie broke her neck when she fell from his back. With physical therapy, she recovered years ago from physical injuries. Dan, her boyfriend, and Mutti, her mother, want her to see a psychologist to help her deal with her lingering fear, but Annemarie refuses to do so. She believes that having Hurrah, Harry’s brother, has helped her heal.

Annemarie goes downstairs to the stable where she rides Hurrah each morning in private. She will not ride him in front of anyone because she feels they are scrutinizing her for signs of obsession.
