Flying as Feminism
The word “feminism” rarely appears in the narrative, if ever; nevertheless, the concept of equality for women is arguably embedded in the writing of every page, certainly in every chapter, and most certainly throughout the book as a whole. As individuals and as a group, the female fliers at the center of the book’s descriptions and contemplations, the so-called Ninety-Nines, were committed to proving that women had the same rights and abilities as men. Their fight played out within a very specific set of circumstances, but the narrative makes it clear that what the women did within those circumstances was the same as what women were doing all over America at the time, and arguably were doing around the world. They were, in words and actions, striving to open minds and wallets and political perspectives to the truth that women deserved the same freedoms, opportunities...
