Joseph Adler

Joseph is Esther’s husband as well as Fannie and Florence’s father. Joseph immigrated from Hungary to America as a young man. He was engaged to Anna’s mother, Inez, before meeting Esther. Joseph is kind, submissive, and helpful. He does his best to do right by Anna and her family, on top of financially supporting his own.

Esther Adler

Esther is Joseph’s wife as well as Fannie and Florence’s mother. It is Esther’s idea to keep Florence’s death a secret from Fannie. Esther is hard on Anna, as she is jealous of Joseph’s past with Anna’s mother. She does her best to shield her family from harm.
