San Diego
The entirety of the novel is set in San Diego, California. When the America's Cup regatta comes to town, the San Diego atmosphere shifts. The city becomes invested in supporting the sailing race, as it brings in many visitors and a surplus of money. The majority of the novel's events are set in local San Diego bars and restaurants or at the characters' homes.
Mission Bay
Mission Bay is the area of water that Fortney and Leeds are responsible for patrolling with the Harbor Unit. They enjoy their work because they have predictable hours and nights off. Most of their work entails pulling over speeding boats or collecting bodies from the water. Fortney is particularly disturbed by the latter assignments.
