Virginia

Virginia is the home of Arthur Swille’s large and lavish estate. Swille is a very wealthy man and owns many slaves. Toward the beginning of the novel, Abraham Lincoln comes to Swille’s home to request funds for the Union in the Civil War. Lincoln manages to charm Swille, who grants the funds. Quickskill flees from Swille and from Richmond before the events of the novel, and he is joined by two other slaves: Stray Leechfield and Forties. After Lincoln frees the slaves and after Swille is killed by his wife, Quickskill returns to Virginia in order to confer with uncle Robin and to adapt Robin’s personal story into a book.
