Summary
The narrative continues to exposit upon Rachel’s perspective. She believed that Toby resented her income but also that Toby had married her in part because he had predicted her wealth and the freedom it would give him. Rachel believed that all resentment against her success was because of her gender. When she turned 40, she decided to stop concealing her anger about all of this. One day soon after, Toby suggested divorce, and Rachel was shocked. Rachel refused to consider divorce. One day, Sam Rothberg invited her to dinner and subtly expressed sexual desire. Rachel and Sam soon began having an affair. Rachel then told Toby that she had changed her mind and now agreed that they should divorce. They began the proceedings, and Toby moved out. Rachel hoped that Sam would leave his wife for her, but she then saw that her success...
