Widows' Point
Widows' Point is the primary setting for the story "Creature." This location is a pan-handled strip of land that juts into the Atlantic Ocean. Carol and her family live on the handle portion of the area, while the Pikes' mansion is located on the pan portion.
Though Widows' Point is not far from the place where she grew up and the apartment where she lives with her mother, it feels like an entirely different world to Carol. Indeed, the Pikes' home is palatial. It appears like the setting for a fairy tale. Carol spends two weeks here with Mrs. Pike, Kay, Hugh, and Kay's two children. Throughout her stay, the dark truths of the adult world gradually collide with and abrade Carol's imagined, romantic versions of reality.
