Summary
Chapter 1 begins at 10 p.m. Redford “Red” Kenny had lost track of the game of Twenty Questions she was playing with her best friend Madeline “Maddy” Lavoy. Red and Maddy were part of a group of six teens headed to Gulf Shores for spring break. They were driving from Philadelphia in a 31-foot-long RV instead of flying and renting a condo so Red, whose father is an alcoholic and has not worked since her mother died, could afford to go with them.
In the RV, Oliver Lavoy, Maddy’s older brother, yelled at his girlfriend, Renya Flores-Serrano, to change lanes because they were about to miss their exit. Red believed the raised voices were her fault because she did not mention they were nearing their exit earlier.
