Lucy

Lucy is a primary character. Her portions of the narrative feature primarily in the chapters marked with her first name. When Lucy is a child, she is taken from her home and family and brought to the residential Mission School, where she is interned until she is 16 years old. On her sixteenth birthday, a nun from the school, Sister Mary, gives her a bus ticket voucher and puts her on a boat to Vancouver with little other guidance or direction. Initially, Lucy is “numb with the notion of freedom,” as she fears leaving her friends and does not know how to get to her friend Maisie in the city (29).
