Summary

In Chapter 6, “Clara,” Clara sits at the bar alone after she and her friends celebrate “Lucy’s success” on the nursing exam (109). She becomes aggressive when a man offers to buy her a drink and will not leave her alone. The bouncer throws her out and a cop tells her to leave the area. Clara wanders around, lost in thought. She sits outside the Manitou, fiddling with a rock, and thinking about Harlan. Suddenly, her mind drifts to her late friend Lily.

Clara and Lily became friends at the Mission. They learned to protect each other from Sister. One night, Sister made them work outside in the cold. Clara begged Sister to let Lily stay inside because she was sick, but Sister refused. While they were working with their overseer, Mr. Walker, Lily collapsed into a coughing fit.
