Summary
In Chapter 3, “Maisie,” Maisie comforts Lucy as she tells her what happened with Walt. Maisie is furious. She knows Walt, because he “[h]angs around the Manitou” where she works and tries “to pimp the working girls” (49). The friends also reminisce about the past. Maisie assures Lucy she can stay with her until she gets on her feet and that Harlan will hire her at the Manitou.
Maisie’s boyfriend Jimmy comes over. When Lucy goes to shower, Jimmy tries to kiss Maisie, but she pulls away, telling him they cannot touch until they are married. Lucy emerges and Maisie notices how uncomfortable she seems around Jimmy. The Mission used to keep the boys and girls separate (52).
Jimmy takes Maisie and Lucy out for soup. At the restaurant, Maisie sees Walt passing in the street and races outside to confront him about Lucy...
