Summary

In the prologue, Clara, Mariah, and Kendra gather at Mariah’s cabin. Clara takes a walk, studying the landscape and remembering the past. Back at the cabin, Vera joins her friend and they bury Clara’s late friend Lily. After years of searching, they finally found Lily’s remains (3).

In Chapter 1, “Kenny,” Kenny has felt “totally helpless” ever since arriving at the Mission School (5). He studies his friend Lucy’s letter, and decides he must escape. Brother John has been mistreating him and the other boys, including Kenny’s friends Wilfred and Howie. Kenny is particularly protective of Howie.

In the dining hall, Kenny sees Lucy “wearing her I am a liar sign” and tells her she is strong (7, Good’s italics). Afterwards, he finishes his outdoor chores and studies the water in the distance. He throws a rock into the water...
