Summary

Chapter 5, “Wednesday, April 29,” focuses on the day stated in the chapter title. On Wednesday, Partee was assigned to patrol Baltimore’s streets with groups of out-of-town police officers. Partee felt resentful for this temporary, as he felt he had done the best possible job under the circumstances. Meanwhile, Jenny and other lawyers sent out ‘habeas corpus’ petitions to legally compel the police to disclose the location of the arrestees. Under this pressure, the police immediately released over 100 juvenile arrestees. Also that morning, Nick walked around his district in Baltimore and witnessed signs of life beginning to return to peaceful routines. Nick felt resentful that media had been trying to portray Baltimore as akin to a war zone. Tawanda returned to her work as a schoolteacher, maintaining hope that future generations could be more peaceful and equitable than past ones.
