The Under Graham Railroad Train
The toy train in the story "The Under Graham Railroad Box Car Set" is a symbol of soulless greed and the exploitation of slave labor that once drove the American economy. This is evident in Rev. and Mrs. Hart's disdain for the train, and Leo's obsession with it. They are concerned with a higher plane of existence; he is concerned with money. However, when Leo acquires the train, he longs to know the story behind how it came into the Harts' possession because he knows that the story is the soul of the toy. When Leo sells the train he notes that the new owner keeps it in a vault in a Swiss bank, which is about as far from its original purpose, to delight a child, as one could imagine.
