Generational Clash Between Mothers and Daughters

A generational clash between mothers and daughters is natural during adolescence. As the daughter begins defining her own preferences in music, dress, and beliefs, some or all of the values the mother holds dear are usually excluded from the definition.

Malu is the 12 year-old daughter of a Mexican mother named Magaly and an American father named Michael. Magaly is heavily invested in her Mexican heritage which prompts Malu to tag her mother with the nickname SuperMexican. Michael loves music, especially punk, and he embraces the fashion and style that go along with that genre. Malu is cool with her dad's choices. She is not as thrilled with her mother's love for Mexican culture. Malu does not understand that her own love of punk and her mother's love of their Mexican heritage can coexist in Malu's life.
