Summary
In Chapter 9, Malu arrives home to find that Magaly is painting a wall tangerine. She notices that Malu is not wearing the makeup and asks what happened. Malu has a form Magaly has to sign. Magaly is obviously upset about it and says that Malu should “try for less punk rocker and more senorita from now on” (69). Malu counters, asking why she cannot be both. Magaly says Jose Guadalupe Posada was known for his political cartoons and his calaveras, which are skulls that are sometimes edible and used in Day of the Dead celebration in Mexican culture. Malu interrupts her mom, sarcastically saying she does not need a history lesson at the end of her school day. Malu spends some time talking to Michael about her day.
