Summary

In Chapter 5, Malu wakes the next morning and feels terrible from crying so much. She puts on a T-shirt with the singer Blondie on it, green jeans, and silver-sequined sneakers. She finds a hole in the sole of her shoes and puts duct tape over it. She puts her hair into two braids, then uses her mother's makeup to create cat eyes that she knows are crooked. She feels the makeup makes her look “a little more punk” (43). Magaly objects but Malu insists and Magaly gives in, though she predicts Malu will regret the makeup and the clothing choices. Magaly calls Malu a “creature of the night” (46) and urges her out the door.

In Chapter 6, Malu easily finds her homeroom class but has trouble making herself walk inside. A student immediately makes a comment about Malu being dressed for Halloween. A girl named...
