Summary
Chapter 1 opens with Maria Luisa, known as Malu, listening to music. After her father, Michael, says that punk rock is supposed to be loud, Malu turns up the volume on her headphones. She is working on a zine, which is a booklet that she makes using pictures and words from magazines, adding drawings and words of her own. Malu is making a zine about all the reasons she does not want to move to Chicago. Her mother, Magaly, has taken a job there as a professor, and they will be gone for two years. Magaly reminds Malu that her father, Michael, will soon arrive. She urges Malu to get dressed, but Malu says she is wearing the clothing she has on. The final eight pages of the first chapter are Malu's zine. The opening page reads, “There's no place like home” (5) and features...
