Neve

Neve is born and raised in Liverpool. She has one brother and is witness to her father's abuse of her mother. Barry drinks all the time. He hits Neve's mother and he is emotionally withdrawn and abusive to both Neve and her brother. After her mother leaves Barry, Neve is asked to remain with her father in a small attempt to keep the peace. Neve hates spending time with her father. She waits until she is in college to finally ask Barry to leave her alone, and he does. Neve becomes estranged from everyone on her father's side of the family. She works at a bar while in college, which is where she meets her good friend Margaret and a man named Michael, who she sleeps with for three years straight.
