Eden, North Carolina is symbolic of the past. Throughout the novel, Evie often thinks about her former hometown with longing. This is the place she grew up with her mother, and therefore the basis for her memories.
Lucca Marino
The name Lucca Marino is symbolic of identity. Ever since working for Mr. Smith, Evie has planned to someday reclaim her old name in order to reclaim her old version of self. However, when Smith kills the Lucca impersonator, Evie fears that she has lost her identity for good. She eventually must let go of the name in order to recreate herself.
Ryan's House
Ryan's house is symbolic of hope and possibility. Evie loves the house, because it reminds her of the place she has always dreamed of living. She becomes attached to her life here, because it resembles the life she wants for herself...
