Chapters 1 through 3 Summary

As the story opens, Jacinda is out with her best friend, Azure. The girls are draki or descended from dragons, and have sneaked away from the city governed by their pride in order to take a daytime flight. Flights in the daylight are prohibited because of the danger of being spotted, despite their remote location. Az reminds Jacinda that Cassian would not approve of their flight but Jacinda ignores the words. Cassian is the son of Sevrin, leader of the pride, and is expected to become leader himself some day. As the pride's only fire-breather, Jacinda is protected as a valuable commodity and most expect that she'll bond with Cassian, with the hope that their children will be fire breathers as well. Jacinda's twin sister, Tamra, likes Cassian but Cassian doesn't give her any notice.
