Fire
Author Jamie Quatro uses fire to symbolize the burning sensation of Margaret's temptation for extramarital affairs. Biblical references flow throughout this novel, and fire is a common symbol in the Christian Bible. Earlier in the novel, Maggie goes through a litany of biblical references with fire as she is cognizant of the battle happening between her head and her heart when it comes to James and just how far she is willing to take her actions. She starts her rant by stating,“You will watch fire consume everything you care about. You will be left with ash—the proper and only end of any burning” (37) and then continue to reference a figure from the Bible named Moses, who famously spoke to God through a burning bush that was enflamed yet did not disintegrate (37).
