England, 1978-1981

The first two book of the novel take place in England from 1978 to 1981, in London and in Bristol. The novel discusses various aspects of this specific time and place, from discussions of Margaret Thatcher to references to racial tensions and riots. Crooks specifically examines the Jamaican immigrant enclaves in Norwood and in Bristol.

The Crypt

The Crypt is a local dancehall club in Norwood situated inside of an underground abandoned church. The club is popular with many residents in and around Norwood, regardless of social or economic status.
