Summary
“The Night Market” begins in Taipei, Taiwan. Jane is visiting her father, Baba, after two years spent apart. Baba works for a university while Jane and her mother, Mah, live in Los Angeles.
Baba brings Jane to a night market to meet his friend, Lee, on her last night there. Jane is annoyed that she got hardly any time alone with Baba. Lee cracks jokes about how handsome Baba was in their school days.
Jane recalls how depressed Baba was before landing this job. He used to spend all day reading comic books in bed. On Sundays, the other dads from church used to drag him out. Jane’s family is very Christian. She and her female piano instructor, Ping, used to laugh about the giant painting of Jesus that hangs in Jane’s living room.
