Summary
20. While she is conducting her regular morning exam on Joy and Louis, a nurse finds one of the lesions that are indications of the sickness on Louis’ leg. Joy notes that she and Louis had been forgetting to mark off the days on their bird calendar. A short time later, a test by Dr. Bek reveals that Louis is starting to lose his memory. As he is taken away, he promises to see Joy soon. Later, when a nurse is stripping Louis’ bed, Joy grabs the sheets and runs away with them. As she hides, she hears herself being summoned to Dr. Bek’s office, and comments in narration that this will be the last time she obeys an order.
