Summary
3. Joy describes her memories of the group home where she spent the first part of her life, having been left there as an infant by her mother. Among the experiences she recalls is the delay in fire trucks arriving after the home had been evacuated because of a fire in the kitchen. The delay, she says, showed her how little she and the other residents of the home were cared for. She also reveals that her name was given to her by the people running the home – Joy Jones, a name she says she never cared for.
Joy then describes the second reason she moved into the Hospital – an encounter with her aunt, Christina, who reached out to her through an organization called Last Rites, formed to fulfill the last wishes of those dying from the sickness. After being taken to the hospital...
