Toronto
The first half and the final chapters of the novel take place in Toronto, the capital of the province of Ontario in Canada. It is implied that the family lives in a neighborhood that is being gentrified, as a wealthy man they call Jay Gatsby frequently visits, hoping to buy their house. Their neighborhood is described in Chapter 5, featuring generally pleasant, suburban details, like a dog park, a lake, and an outdoor market. Swiv and Mooshie then walk to a park in downtown Toronto where they observe people playing tennis. In Chapter 8, Swiv takes the bus with Elvira to Toronto's Scarborough neighborhood, where Elvira visits her hairdresser.
