Point of View

The majority of the novel is written in a close third-person narration from Nori's perspective. Earlier in the novel, there are also moments of first-person narration from Nori's perspective, usually when Nori is offering up prayers. When Nori has dreams or nightmares, she also occasionally sees herself in the third-person. Nori's narration begins when as a child, and her point of view follows her relative youth and innocence. Her thoughts and speech is clear, but simple. She often recalls what others have said to her and avoids thinking for herself. Her thinking grows more complex as she grows up, and the narration shows greater humor and self-awareness. As she ages, there are fewer prayer interludes, dreams, or recall of other character's words. This gradual evolution helps to show Nori gaining her own voice and confidence.
