Power

The author uses his 15 canine dog characters' divine gift of human intelligence to explore the complications of power and authority dynamics between creatures of varying species. After the dogs realize their change in intellect, they immediately begin worrying over who will lead them. Majnoun and Atticus, the most dominant members of the pack, are particularly concerned with who is best suited to assume a position of leadership. While Majnoun is more subdued by the gift, desiring to use his intellect to guide the pack towards a deeper understanding of their role in the world, Atticus becomes obsessed with dominating those he believes are weaker than him. These disparities cause unrest between the dogs, even later resulting in violent ends for many of the members.
