The Coppice
The coppice where the dogs form a new home after escaping the kennel, symbolizes socio-political structure. Not long after gaining human intelligence, the dogs begin battling over who should assume the position as their leader. Once Atticus takes power, the coppice becomes representational of strict social structures. While living in the coppice, the dogs must follow his prescribed manners of speaking, thinking, and behaving. The author uses life in the coppice to explore the dangers of political power and social adversity.
Benjy
Benjy's character symbolizes greed and selfishness. Unlike many of the other dogs in the pack, Benjy uses his human intellect to manipulate others, both canine and human, to his advantage. He is even disloyal to those original members of his pack. Through his character, the author explores the hazards of sacrificing others' wellbeing for the sake of one's individual gain.
