Majnoun

Majnoun is one of the 15 dogs to whom Apollo and Hermes give the gift of human intelligence. Majnoun is a larger black dog, who is more introspective than many of his fellow pack members. Though he is concerned with the question of leadership at the start of the apologue, he does not win the role over another powerful dog Atticus. In fact, Atticus quickly drives Majnoun out of the pack, nearly killing him in High Park. When Majnoun wakes up, he barely remembers what has happened to him, shocked to be alive. A couple, Nira and Miguel, soon find his wounded body and take him home to recover. As Majnoun heals, he grows accustomed to his new home and life. He even begins picking up on his new companions' modes of communication. He is disturbed and confused, then, when he begins speaking to Nira and she faints. So...
