Fate
Serapio and Naranpa's clash displays how difficult it is to resist fate, but how one must try. While Serapio gave into his destiny. Naranpa sees a chance for both of them to be free.
Throughout the novel, Serapio struggles with what he is meant to do after surviving the Sun Rock massacre. He constantly wonders what he is and throws himself fully into killing Naranpa because that was his destiny. He cannot imagine doing anything else because he had been groomed to be the crow god's avatar. He has no other obvious fate. On Sun Rock, Serapio tells Naranpa, "All my life, I have been told to hate you. Those who raised me spoke only of vengeance, but their vengeance ended always in my death, and they did not care.
