Point of View

This novel is written in first person point of view, from Amanda’s perspective. The entire novel is a dialogue between Amanda and David, so all of the events which transpire are described by Amanda as she talks to David. Because of this, most the novel is Amanda describing how she got sick to David in present tense. However, the focus of the narrative occasionally shifts from Amanda’s story to present day. For example, Amanda says “I go over to her” (73) when she is telling David one part of her story. Further into the novel, David tells Amanda to be “careful with the stairs” (106) when he takes her out of the hospital bed. Amanda leaving the hospital bed is an event which happens in present day, and Amanda telling David that she is going “over to her” (73) describes an event which occurred in the...
