Gender and Identity
Callender portrays the fluidity of gender, suggesting that even those who transition can continue questioning gender. In the novel, gender is an important aspect of self-discovery that should not be assumed or taken for granted. While Felix knows he is trans, he does not feel that the label of “boy” or even “trans boy” is entirely accurate, and feels a lot of anxiety over his questioning. He worries that since he transitioned, he can no longer question himself. Through the Gender Identity discussion group at the LGBT Community Centre, Felix learns that he never has to stop reflecting on his identity. All that matters is finding a label that feel right for himself.
