Point of View

The novel is written from main character Mizuki's first person point of view. Because the novel is primarily interested in exploring Mizuki's interpersonal relationships and emotional complexities, writing the narrative from her vantage point allows the author to fully inhabit her distinct experience. Indeed, at the start of the novel, Mizuki suggests that the purpose of her account is to revisit her relationship with Kiyoshi. This relationship, however, has always been secret. Therefore, Mizuki is the only individual who can recount her version of this experience. Mizuki's complex emotional and psychological centers also complicate the ways in which she renders her account.
