Summary
In Chapter 1, Mizuki thinks her affair with Kiyoshi was inevitable. Though it is over, she is often convinced that "he could have been anyone" (1). She was already upset and her marriage was already tense. However, she is also reluctant to diminish her love for Kiyoshi.
When she feels emotionally overwhelmed, she is unsure if it is related to her husband, Tatsuya, and her children, Aki and Eri. On the Tokyo Metro, she feels "most open-minded,” and tries shaking her bad thoughts away (3). She reads passing ads. She thinks about the fault lines running beneath, and the possibility of dying in an earthquake.
Because Mizuki has "a perfect life," she tells herself she is "going to be happy" (4). However, before she actually pursues this goal, she wants to have one last temper tantrum about Kiyoshi (5).
