Summary
The narrator is working on a book in his house when he hears a car pull into his driveway. He goes outside and finds that the car is his father’s, and he sees his “dead father leaning on the steering wheel” (109). The narrator takes his father into the house and they speak for some time. The narrator helps his father come to terms with the fact that he has died. Even though the narrator likes having his father there, he insists that the father must leave since he is dead.
After the father’s funeral, the son sees his father in his car again. The father invites him into the car and they drive away. They pass through various “dreamlands” (109), and the son laments the fact that he will miss his father. The story ends with a final description of the father...
