In March 1939 German stormtroopers invaded her native Czechoslovakia and escorted Adolf Hitler to Prague Castle. She and her parents were forced into hiding for ten days before escaping to London where they lived with other exiled Europeans for the six years of WWII. Their return to a free Czechoslovakia was short-lived, due to the Communist takeover in 1948; their final flight to safety took them to their new and permanent home in the United States. After battalions of German stormtroopers invaded her native Czechoslovakia on March 15, 1939, her family fled to London where they remained for the duration of the war. After the Nazis surrendered, her family returned home with high hopes for the future.
