Summary

When Maya's father moves out of the house, she feels unsafe, since he would not be able to frighten away any "burglar, bear, monster" that threatens their home (155). She worries that her mother is still drinking alcohol. She also worries that eventually Grace would tire of her and stop wanting to share time with her. She "could feel a spiral of darkness starting to weave around the people she loved" (156). Maya feels responsible to take care of Lauren, since she is her younger sister.
