Importance: Early in the novel, Cam recalls Kai’s statement that “love is a tangible thing” (57). Although Cam is heartbroken at this point in the narrative, he eventually comes to understand the semi-permanence of love and connection. Although his relationship with Kai ended after Kai’s death, he accepts that his own presence renders their love present and “palpable” (57).
