Santo Domingo is the city in the Dominican Republic that the Marte family lives in before they move to New York City. The four sisters of the older generation all live in Santo Domingo before they immigrate to the United States. The youngest sister Camila lives in the upper-scale side of the city, and works in a luxury hotel. The other sisters are not as wealthy, which leads them to leave the city for more opportunities in America. Camila is the last to leave Santo Domingo. From the younger generation, Pastora's daughter Yadi is born in Santo Domingo and returns to live nearby in her teen years.
