Summary
After Ona and Jeremiah leave her apartment, Yadi and Ant begin catching up. The two express still caring for one another and being attracted to one another. Despite her sister's advice, the two sleep together. This evokes conflicting feelings of happiness and sadness in Yadi. Because of this, she cannot sleep. Instead, she stays up all night cooking dishes for her aunt Flor's wake. As she cooks, this part of the novel, "One Day Until the Wake," ends.
As the final part of the novel opens, named "The Wake," Ona and Jeremiah are waking up after their fight the night before. They both struggle to see the viewpoints of the other, and remain at odds with each other over Ona's intense desire to have a child.
