New York City

New York City is the most populous city in the United States. Most of the novel takes place in New York City in the weeks following the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. Lianne and Keith both live in New York City, and they reunite following the attacks in an attempt to salvage their marriage.

World Trade Center

The World Trade Center was a large office complex in New York City. It featured two tall towers that were destroyed when terrorists hijacked airplanes and crashed them into the towers on September 11, 2001. Keith and Florence are present in the towers during the attack, but they both survive. They soon develop a sexual relationship. Keith witnesses the death of his friend and colleague Rumsey during the attacks.
