Keith

Keith is a lawyer who lives and works in New York City. He is married to Lianne, but they have become estranged. The company for which he works has its offices in the World Trade Center, so he is there during the September 11 attacks. He manages to escape with only minor injuries, and he feels compelled to recommit himself to Lianne and their young son Justin.

Keith soon begins an affair with Florence, a woman who also survived the 9/11 attacks. Keith struggles internally with his attraction to Florence and his newfound loyalty towards Lianne and Justin. He eventually stops seeing Florence, and he loses interest in looking for a new job following 9/11. Towards the end of the novel, he begins spending most of his time playing poker in Las Vegas, as he craves risk, as well as escape from his previous life.
