Summary

The story begins on September 11, 2001 at the site of the attack on the World Trade Center. Keith, a businessman who works there, manages to evacuate before he is killed. From the ground, he observes the chaos of the destruction. He is carrying a briefcase and moving away from the site of the attack. A stranger offers him a bottle of water. A stranger driving a truck offers to give Keith a ride, and Keith accepts the offer. The story then transitions to Chapter 2, which follows Keith’s estranged wife Lianne. Lianne and her mother, Nina, live in separate apartments in New York City. Lianne visits her mother to talk about the recent events.
